NEWS RELEASE: Alliance sweeps both Outstanding Playand Musical Awards.Atlanta Playwright Pearl Cleage receives the Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award.Atlanta, GA November 10, 2008: The Atlanta theatrical community celebrated its own tonight decked out in its finest as the 4th Annual Suzi Awards were held in the beautiful Egyptian ballroom of the Fabulous Fox Theatre. This year’s event presented awards in twenty categories representing the best in metro Atlanta professional theatres.
Alliance Theatre swept the evening by winning both major awards. First taking home the prize for Outstanding Play, Tarell Alvin McCraney’s brilliant In the Red and Brown Water, then for Outstanding Musical, artistic director Susan Booth’s haunting staging of the classic, Jacques Brel is Alive an Well and Living in Paris. Atlanta’s Tony winning theatre also took home eleven other awards during the evening including both director awards, Tina Landau for In the Red and Brown Water and Susan Booth for Jacques Brel…Paris.
Aurora Theatre took home its first-ever Suzi award for Lead Actress in a Musical, Natasha Drena’s sumptuous performance as Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun. Bethany Anne Lind won the Featured Actress in a Play award for Jewish Theatre of the South’s farewell presentation of The Last Schwartz.
Del Hamilton, artistic director of 7 Stages, proudly introduced and presented the Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting award to Atlanta’s own Pearl Cleage for her first script written in ten years, the stirring A Song for Coretta.
The evening did have its sad moments as a video tribute was presented of founder Gene-Gabriel Moore, who passed away this summer. The 2008 “Spirit of Suzi’ award was presented to local actress and educator, Carol Mitchel-leon. Presented by her dear friend, Dr. Jen Harper, the award was tearfully accepted by former student and recent colleague, Dorothy Bell. Ms. Mitchell-leon was unable to attend for health reasons.
