The Suzi Bass Awards, founded in 2003 by Gene-Gabriel Moore and a small group of industry professionals, celebrates outstanding work in live theatre and the artists who produce it. Twenty-one professional theatres in Atlanta participate in the awards process. Each theatre season The Suzi Bass Awards volunteer judges choose nominees and recipients in twenty-five performance categories. In addition, the annual Spirit of Suzi Award honors a person or organization for their long-time dedication to Atlanta theatre. The Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award recognizes Atlanta's talented local playwrights through special notice of a recently produced play. The Audience Choice Award recognizes one theatre's entire season through voting by the general public, and the Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes an individual or group with long-time volunteer contributions to a particular theatre.
Mission
The Suzi Bass Awards celebrate excellence in Metro Atlanta’s professional theatre community. We invigorate the arts economy and community through increased exposure and visibility, increasing the audience base for both theatres and artists. Our events and programs educate the general public, Judges and Members of the organization, theatre artists, and students through seminars, mentoring and workshops.
Structure
The Suzi Bass Awards is a not-for-profit corporation of the state of Georgia under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Service code. Constructed as a membership organization and governed by an elected volunteer Board of Directors, the Suzi Bass Awards constantly strives to reflect the integrity and nature of the Atlanta professional theatre community. Membership in the Suzi Awards is open to any interested individual. Our Participating Theatres are not members, and do not pay any fee to have their productions considered. Their obligations for consideration consist only of providing our volunteer judges with complimentary tickets according to the policies set out in the Suzi Bass Awards Guidelines. The Guidelines and Judging Processes are analyzed each year for effectiveness and fairness, and revised when necessary, then published to the community at large.
