The Red Phoenix Theatre Company emerged one winter's night in 2009 when a group of friends were spending the evening together. Among them, Jeffrey Scott Bailey (Co-Artistic Director), Eric Michael Bragg (Co-Artistic Director) and Stephanie Darlene Wallace (Production Director) were discussing the shows that they had always wanted to be a part of. While talking, the three agreed that it was frustrating to wait around for another company to produce the titles and diversity in production seasons for which they had been longing. As the evening progressed, a single question emerged, "Why wait?" That night, the three realized that they could create their own company and produce the shows about which they were so passionate.
Each of them offered a unique skill set, background knowledge, and professional experience to the partnership. Bailey, who had moved to Atlanta just three years earlier from New York City, by way of Washington D.C had an extensive resume in performance and directing (The Kennedy Center as well as Broadway National and International tours). Bragg has been a professional educator in the arts (Director of Drama at River Trail Middle School/Creek View Elementary School) as well as freelancing as a professional actor and director in the Atlanta area. In addition, Wallace provided the grounding production experience as a professional stage manager and theatrical coordinator with numerous companies to her credits.
Over the next few months, the three partners continued to tinker with the idea of how to get the company off the ground. Initially, they needed to come up with a name. As they brainstormed the possibilities, the idea of the phoenix was mentioned. Subsequently, the three of them were all emerging from transitions in their personal lives. The notion that their company could emerge out of the ashes of those chapters in their lives appealed to the three.
In searching for a home to produce their first season, the Red Clay's name came up. It's a fantastic facility and the managing team there has been very receptive to the triads' vision for the company's 2010 and 2011 seasons. The three were thrilled at the possibility of having their first two seasons being produced at the same theatre. Due to the partners' gratitude to the city of Duluth and their excitement at settling into their new home at the Red Clay, the three decided to combine like energies and finally named the company "The Red Phoenix Theatre Company".
Since early 2010, the three have been working tirelessly to bring their vision of the Red Phoenix out of the ashes and soaring into the light of a new day. The three strongly believe that this is the beginning of a new chapter and that it is truly the beginning of something extraordinary for them all.
