It all started on May 16, 1984. As You Like It opened for a one week run at Manuel's Tavern on North Highland Avenue and a dream was born. Ultimately attracting national attention with articles in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and coverage by CBS and CNN news programs, this modest production became the defining experience for what would ultimately become America's only Shakespeare Tavern: An Original Practice Playhouse with a British-Pub menu available before each performance.
ASC specializes in a theatrical approach called ‘Original Practice.’ Whether the company presents an original piece, an American classic, or a timeless masterpiece by William Shakespeare, each production is a process that begins with the way the play was originally staged in its own time and ends with a modern audience experiencing the play in a manner consistent with its creator's original intent.
Furthermore, we believe that the most important part of our job is to make the words of the playwright come alive and to explore that message with you rather than merely reciting it “at” you. In Shakespeare’s case, we like to call this exploration the “communion of actor, audience, and playwright through poetry.” We use live sound effects created by the acting company, perform period music live and on appropriate instruments. We use Elizabethan style costumes on our Globe-inspired (Shakespeare’s original theatre) stage and talk directly to you, the audience, in much the same way we believe Shakespeare and his acting company would have directly addressed Elizabethan audience members.
Most importantly the acting company is primarily made up of experienced actors accustomed to performing together, along with new Apprentices just learning the ropes. We use the script we think Shakespeare approved for use in his own company and we like having a good time while we do it.
